It was introduced in 2005 and has since become one of the most widely used manual brewers, particularly among people who want a fast, consistent cup without a large or expensive setup.

Its appeal comes down to four things: it brews in under two minutes, it is light and portable enough to travel with, it tolerates a wide range of grind sizes and water temperatures without producing a noticeably bad result, and it is easy to clean. For people who want quality coffee at home or away from a fixed kitchen setup, it is one of the most practical options available.

What Makes AeroPress Different?

Immersion Brewing:

Like the French Press, the AeroPress keeps coffee grounds in direct contact with water for a set steep time before separating them. This full immersion approach extracts evenly from the whole coffee bed rather than relying on water to pass through in a single flow. The result is consistent extraction even if the grind is not perfectly uniform – which makes the AeroPress more forgiving than pour over when grind precision is limited.

Gentle Pressure Extraction:

After steeping, pushing the plunger down applies gentle pressure that forces the liquid through the filter. This is not espresso-level pressure – a standard AeroPress produces roughly 0.35-0.75 bar compared to the 9 bar used in espresso machines. The pressure does not significantly change the extraction chemistry, but it speeds up the final pass through the grounds and produces a slightly denser cup than free-drip methods.

The AeroPress cannot produce true espresso regardless of technique. The pressure is too low to create the emulsification that forms espresso crema. Concentrate recipes produce a strong, dense cup – but it is not espresso.

Paper Filtration:

AeroPress Brewing Methods

There are three main ways to use the AeroPress. Each produces a slightly different result and suits different situations:

Step-by-Step Brewing Process

The recipe below uses the standard method and is a reliable starting point. Adjust variables once this baseline is consistent.

AeroPress coffee sits between French Press and pour over in terms of body and clarity. It has its own distinct character that results from the combination of immersion and pressure:

  •       Clarity: Cleaner than French Press due to the paper filter, but slightly less transparent than pour over. The cup is free of sediment and has a defined flavour without being as bright as filtered drip coffee.
  •       Body: Medium body – noticeably more weight than a pour over, less dense than French Press. The combination of immersion and light pressure produces a cup that feels full without being heavy.
  •       Sweetness: AeroPress coffee is often described as having natural sweetness, particularly at lower brewing temperatures (85-90 °C). Cooler water favours sweet and chocolatey notes over brightness and acidity.
  •       Acidity: Moderate and adjustable. Higher water temperatures increase perceived acidity; lower temperatures reduce it. This temperature sensitivity gives more control over the final cup profile than most other methods.
  •       Mouthfeel: Smooth and relatively clean. The paper filter removes most oils, so the texture is closer to filtered coffee than immersion brewing, despite the steeping phase.

Cleaning and Maintenance

After Each Brew:

The AeroPress is one of the fastest brewers to clean. Once you have pressed the coffee, hold the AeroPress over a bin and push the plunger all the way through. The compressed coffee puck ejects cleanly in one piece. Rinse the rubber seal and chamber under running water. That is the full clean for daily use – no soaking or scrubbing required.

Filter Care:

Paper filters are single-use and go in the bin with the coffee puck. If using a reusable metal filter, rinse it under running water after each brew and check periodically that the mesh is not blocked with fine grounds. Metal filters do not need soaking but benefit from an occasional rinse with warm soapy water.

Deep Cleaning:

The AeroPress disassembles fully for cleaning. The rubber plunger seal can be removed from the plunger for a more thorough rinse. All components are dishwasher-safe. A periodic clean with a small amount of washing-up liquid removes any oil build-up from the chamber walls, which can affect flavour over time.

Storage:
